It is with great pleasure that we invite you to an online performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers, which was originally produced at the Savoy Theatre, London in 1889 and presented by Encore! at the Hirsch Theatre, Jerusalem in 2013.
The opera is set in the beautiful city of Veniceand the story concerns the young bride of the heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Barataria who arrives in Venice to join her husband to whom she was betrothed as a baby. It turns out, however, that he cannot be identified, since he was entrusted to the care of a drunken gondolier who mixed up the prince with his own son.
To complicate matters, the King of Barataria has just been killed. The two young gondoliers must now jointly rule the kingdom until the nurse of the prince can be brought in to determine which of them is the rightful king. Moreover, when the young queen arrives to claim her husband, she finds that the two gondoliers have both recently married local girls. A last complicating factor is that she, herself, is in love with another man.
Encore! offers you this musical masterpiece in appreciation for your encouragement and support over the years. Donations, of course, will be greatly appreciated, and may be made online,
or by bank transfer to our account at Bank Hapoalim (12), Talpiot branch (748), account 433643 in the name of Encore Educational Theatre Company. Charitable receipts will be issued, as requested.
The Yeomen of the Guard is Gilbert and Sullivan’s one dramatic opera- one that presents a serious story with realistic characters, rather than the usual “topsy-turvey” world inhabited by the denizens of the Pinafore, Titipu and Barataria.
2008 marks the 120th anniversary of the origional production at the Savoy Theater, London. Encore! assembled a distinguished cast of 50 to produce the work and, though it has pruned some of the excessive dialogue in the book, reinstated some of the music cut immediately before the opening night in 1888.
The production has been designed and directed by Robert Binder, with Arlene Chertoff handling choreography and Paul Saulter at the helm as musical director.
Performed at the Hirch Theater, Beit Shmuel, Jerusalem, December 2008.
Encore! Educational Theatre Company is proud to present Rothschild and Sons
Directed by Robert Binder
Musical direction by Paul Salter
Choreography by Batya Feder

Description: Encore! Educational Theatre Company proudly presents Bock and Harnick’s Rothschild & Sons, a powerful musical drama depicting the rise of the Rothschild family in Frankfurt and their efforts to use their wealth and influence to obtain rights for European Jews, including the dismantling of ghetto walls.
Featuring an all-star cast of Encore! veterans and newcomers, Rothschild & Sons traces the history of European Jewry over half-a-century, from the courtly powdered wigs of Hesse-Cassel to the triumphant Alliance following the defeat of Napoleon. The songs, written by the team that created Fiddler on the Roof, shows influences of late 18th and early 19th-century music, yet has a contemporary feel with Jewish strains that pack a punch.
